Free Speech and Facebook
By Jonathan CousarIn a stunning move, Facebook just turned down an ad I submitted because it had a photo of President Obama in it! I've run many ads with his photo and as a matter of political free speech it is essential that citizens be able to use the image of their president. Facebook is a private company and of course has the right to turn down whatever ads they want but I thought you all would be interested to see their reasoning in their own words. Here's what they emailed to me when I asked why our ad had not been approved (and I say "our" ad because you guys are helping to pay for it through your contributions):
"Hi Jonathan,
The image used in this ad is prohibited. We do not allow ads with images of Obama and will not allow the creation of any further Facebook Ads using images of him. We appreciate your cooperation with this policy.
Thanks for your understanding"
Sorry, but I DON'T understand. They always allowed images of Obama to be used in the past. Why would they suddenly decide to no longer allow his image? Is it too incendiary!? Does it just infuriate too many people!? I doubt it! It must be something else. Hmm... I wonder what it could be!?

That's beyond peculiar. I wonder if they allow images of other politicians and world leaders.
ReplyDeleteNope it's open game on everyone else...
ReplyDeleteI completely dont understand it either?? What happened to "Freedom of Speech"??
ReplyDeleteIts funny how newspapers, TV Shows (Saturday Night live, and Mad TV) can get away with their President jokes... but as soon an everyday joe, says one comment, or makes a joke.. its a huge issue?
Making fun of our everyday Politicians has been around since the beginning of the Politicians. People are simply expressing Politics in a humourous way. Nothing more or less. The whole "Making fun of Politicians" according to website - dates back to Oct. 1890. Just google search History of making fun of Politicians.
Another good conversation website (related information): www.helium.com
Check out the article: Poking fun at Politicians.
I do understand that Facebook has their rights and policies. I am just supporting the fact that people may poke at Politicians - its no different then an everyday joke.
Come on people.. Clinton took more jokes then anyone, and he at least can laugh about it! lol
